The Good Natured - Warriors

The Good Natured is one of a few local bands I’ve had the pleasure of seeing recently in Reading. When playing live Sarah McIntosh is accompanied by Hamish on bass guitar but otherwise it’s just her and her tatty old keyboard which was rescued from her grandmother. It’s hard to believe that she gets such a sound out of it. Her voice has the clear and innocent accented charm of Kate Nash with less of the annoying factor.

The EP, Warriors, was officially released on October 6th but you may well have already got hold of a copy if you’re local and a MySpace user, as she’s been offering copies on MySpace recently.

Her sound is fabulously wicked and arty synth-led electro-pop. The music sounds complicated but is almost certainly wildly simple. The title track of the EP may sound big and echoy but the melody of the lyrics is simple and catchy. On all of the songs the lyrics sound simple but are loaded with undertones, overtones, imagery, dreams and imaginative takes on real life. You could set much harder lyrics to the same music and have a totally different result.

In the main the tracks are pretty punchy. Irony Forever has its racing scaling riffs which are reminiscent of computer game sound tracks and dance music combined and Heart Of Stone is rather more funky and almost trance in nature. Rose, however, is slightly softer; not so heavy on the synths, more piano and drum beats, lyrical rather than emphatic.

If you’re local to Reading you can see The Good Natured at The Rising Sun Arts Centre.
