SilverSky - Calling All Killers

It’s entirely possible that you’ve never heard of SilverSky (unless you’ve been readng here before). In fact it’s very hard to find out much about them online except the little bits on information you can glean from MySpace, which is hard work at the best of times. The London based band have a new single, Calling All Killers is released on October 16th; an excellent a-side with a very good b-side.

Calling All Killers is in essence a rock song. It’s heavy on the cymbals, features a simple oscillating guitar solo and a strong clear voice with a hint of metal warble (of what? -ed). The refrain “calling all the killers” does have a bit of QOTSA about it but that’s really the only comparison that I want to make. It’s brief and could easily be ignored. I dislike it when there are so many bits of a song that sound familiar that you lose sight of the originality. My favourite lyric is “Day time freaks become night time sinners”. It has a particularly nice ring to it.

We Should Be Dead is the b-side which definitely has a Morrissey-influenced vocal to it. It’s a little tamer than the a-side, and properly so. You can’t have the b-side taking over now can you? There’s no guitar solo, less cymbal and it’s a bit more pop than rock but still very worthy of a listen. The production means that the vocal isn’t swamped by the music and I sincerely hope that it’s this way on stage too. I very much enjoy the music that SilverSky knock out but it’s definitely four stars rather than five.

“ a hint of metal warble ”
