Silverfall - Movies
Do a search for Silverfall online and you’ll likely come up with a bunch of results for a computer game. You may be happy with that but look a little deeper and you will find that there is also a band that goes by this name. A very good one.
Silverfall formed two years ago and are recording their first album due out in January 2009. They’re about to release a single on the 23rd October on Tired Horse Records with help from producer Ian Grimble who has worked with such greats as Texas, The Beautiful South and Manic Street Preachers. They are fronted by lead singer Jenny Bailey, hailing from Mexborough in South Yorkshire, who brings a certain maturity and innocence, along with heartfelt lyrics to her songs.
This is essentially relaxed guitar based pop music. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. Sometimes you just need to chill out and be happy. In those moments you could do far worse than listen to the single, Movies. The underlying comment is that life isn’t like the movies but often it can be better. The lyrics include phrases like “life gets better every day” and “reality is slipping into seedy bars in Soho” but really, despite the heroine not being Julia Roberts she goes to bed laughing and wakes up smiling and generally all is right with the world. This sounds rather sickly sweet but the track is very lyrical, melodic and Jenny’s vocal lacks the saccharine that would make it unbearable. The guitar is happy and energetic, the kind I’d expect to hear from an Irish pop band such as The Corrs.
The b-side is a cover of Your Loving Arms (Billie Ray Martin), the opening notes of which had me open mouthed in delight. Jenny has exactly the right voice for this and the track, although just a guitar and her vocal the track made me tingle a bit.
I can’t wait to hear the album because I think there’s real potential here.
